Our Mission
We aim to support NYC elementary and middle school students by providing free academic, technological, and social support while also fostering a community between students, tutors, and families.
What Learning Pals Is
This program was started because of the massive difficulty many younger students faced in online learning. The program gives elementary and middle school students free one-on-one tutor sessions with a high school tutor. One student and one tutor are paired, and meetings are scheduled between the tutor and the student. In return we ask that you fill out our feedback forms, so we can improve the program.
Tutors primarily help with with school work, but if students need help with a specific topic, tutors are happy to pull together extra practice problems. We do not have our own curriculum, and may use websites such as Khan Academy for practice problems.
Aside from getting a tutor, students also join a community of other students and tutors. There are group meetings (more information below) that bring together different students to lessen the feelings of isolation that so many of us are having right now.

Our Focus
Technology HelpSwitching to remote learning is a big transition, and navigating so many new websites and apps can be overwhelming. Our tutors are well versed in many different platforms frequently used by schools (e.g. Zoom, Google Classroom) and can walk through them with students and parents. We are here to answer any technology-based questions you might have!

SocializationThe lack of in-person school has left most students isolated at home. Calls with our tutors are a great way to interact with new people. Our tutors want to help students learn, but just as important to us is engaging with them. We also coordinate fun group sessions where we watch movies and play games!

Academic TutoringMany students have fallen behind during online school because they haven't been able to forge strong connections with teachers. Having one-on-one meetings with tutors gives students a space to ask questions and more deeply understand their course work. For students learning English, our group sessions are a great chance to practice the language in a fun environment!

Group Classes, Games, and Clubs
Group meetings are fun-filled sessions hosted by our tutors that are geared towards socialization. Each session is for a specific range of grade levels to ensure the activities are fun and appropriate for each student. Please check out the schedule below, and use the links to register for events your child would like to participate in!
Note: students can sign up for group meetings even if they are not receiving tutoring!

Attention schools! If you are a parent coordinator, teacher, or similar who wants to get tutoring for more than three students, please email us (nyclearningpals@gmail.com) first.
